Tobacco Lath Display Racks.

One thing that I've always been at a loss for at the farmers markets I've done is good display racks for handmade stuff and seeds. Recently I started building a few out of tobacco lath. I've had some luck selling some of these and thought I'd share with my blog readers as some of you might be interested.

First up is one of the seed racks we did for Fresh Start Growers supply in louisville KY. We can make these of any size you might want or need and make custom signs for them if needed as well. We also currently have three Face Of The Earth 10 variety seed racks for sale at 225.00 (the seeds alone would normally be 300.00) with your choice of seeds from Face Of The Earth (Amanda Palmer is completely sold out however). Next up are these custom made soap racks, they fold flat with the addition of a bolt and wing nut. These are 15 x 15 inches. I can make them like this or vertical racking as well. 25.00 each plus shipping.

These ladder racks are fantastic for displaying handmade washrags exct. Or if you screw some i-hooks into them are great for displaying earrings. 20.00 plus shipping.

Sold out for 2012

Hey gang, we are happy and sad at the same time to announce that we are officially sold out of seed for the 2012 season. Thanks for all your support and expect a bigger selection next season. We do have a few 10-15 variety seed racks left for those of you who run a retail location and are interested. In case you've not seen our hand made racks here is a photo for you; these are made out of tobacco lath sticks from the family farm. Local folks can pick up seeds from Fresh Start Growers Supply in Louisville KY and in coming weeks from McCarty's Sunoco in Pekin Indiana.

About Us!!!

Bishop's Homegrown Face of the Earth Seed began as a little breeding project about 6 years ago. Not content to relegate myself to low quality and un-adapted (to my conditions) seed varieties I decided to peruse a science I knew little of; plant breeding.

We started making wide and varied controlled and often uncontrolled crosses between varieties within a species and offering our seeds to friends and gardeners around the world via seed trades. We found a lot of interest in our early work and some of those varieties are listed here; in a more stable form than ever offered before. We picked up the name Hip-Gnosis seed development to represent our unique breeding enterprises based on the last name that I recorded music under.

In my efforts to breed new varieties I have strived to maintain that folk selection is just as important to true plant breeding as are diagrams, pictures, hypothesis, and more. I try to blend equal parts of common sense and science into the career path that I have chosen and infuse and fold those concepts with the concept of my spirituality, my heart, my love, and my belief in the connection between man and nature.

Like me most of my projects could be considered mutts. We call them often times "amalgalmmutts". We have centered our breeding efforts on creating new strains of very bio-diverse seeds well adapted to the wider Ohio Valley but with more than enough diversity to be adapted to far wider regions. Indeed, many of our varieties have circled the earth with growers in the Far East, the Middle East, South America, Australia, the Deep South, Canada, The West Coast, and Europe.

The unique seed strains are often Grexes consisting of "sister lines" of various segregating and unique hybrids we have made, several strains are also mixes of the best of "sister lines" from multiple crosses in our search and desire to create new and vigorous landrace varieties.

The joke amongst my Fiancé Kim and I is that we participate in "Non Eugenics based public domain plant breeding." While our official slogan is "Alchemical seeds for archaic times!"

It's important to add that we are not "professionals" in any sense of the word when it comes to plant breeding and that instead of spending years with our nose jammed into boring botany books of no real relevance to our endeavor we have instead spent years with our nose jammed in research journals written by luminaries such as Dr. Alan Kapuler, Ramblings by great men such as Ken Ettlinger, E-Mails and calls from Mr. Tom Wagner and Tim Peters, and a myriad of information gained from the many "old timers" locally and abroad who were kind enough to give us their time of day as well as the irreplaceable Gnosis gained by keeping our feet in the ground and our head in the sky making simple observations.

We hope you find our list interesting and helpful. This is just the gestation stage of a much larger, yet to be birthed, Face Of The Earth Seed Company (we hope!).
